S p a r r i n g R u
l e s : Stand Up
-A minimum of 1 Center Referee, with 2 (or 4) Side Judges to call
points
-Matches will consist of 1 or 2 rounds for adults, and 1 round for
juniors. Each round will be 2 min long. There will be a 30 second
rest period in between rounds. Championship matches will be 2 or
3 rounds
-Mandatory equipment will be: Clean and complete martial arts uniform
w/ belt or sash, NO tank tops or T-shirts allowed for sparring.
Groin cup (for men), Mouth Piece, Head Gear, Approved sparring gloves,
foot pads and shin guards. *Chest protectors are optional.
-No long finger or toe nails, No jewelry (necklaces, rings etc),
No torn or un-repaired uniforms
-F. 3 P. System (First Three Points), For junior and kids divisions.
First three points scored wins. If under three points, then highest
total points at the end of the match. Points need majority confirmation
in order to be awarded (Minimum 2 out of 3 judges must agree on
the point)
-A.P.C. System (All Points Count), For Adult divisions. Points do
not need majority confirmation in order to be awarded. All judges
points will count when a call for points takes place.
-One point will be awarded for controlled punches and kicks to legal
targets
-Legal targets are: Side of head gear. NO face shots (unless opponent
has face cage). Trunk on body, Sides on ribs, Rear only at kidneys
(NO back or spine shots), Controlled rear leg kicks to outer thigh,
going with the knee joint (ONLY if striking with foot pad or shin
guard. ABSOLUTLY NO bare foot or bare shin strikes to legs - No
strikes against the knee joint!), Very controlled shots to the groin.
(You will get a warning or DQ !)
-Sweeps allowed only going with the knee joint, and must be followed
by a punch (with-in 3 seconds). NO kicks or stomps to opponent on
ground ! (You will get a warning or DQ !)
-NO uncontrolled, blind or wild shots (You will get a warning or
DQ !), No excessive contact, No drawing of blood (Accidents will
be reviewed by the judges).
-NO head butts, elbow or knee strikes. NO eye, neck or joint attacks.
No gouging or "fish hooking". NO biting or scratching.
-No profanity, no un-sportsman like conduct, and NO disrespect will
be allowed or tolerated (This will result in IMMEDIATE Disqualification,
and you will not be refunded.
-No hip or shoulder throws. No low spin sweep kicks
-No clinches longer than 3 seconds. No strikes allowed during clinches.
-No running away, out of bounds or stalling (will result in a warning)
-No coaching during rounds. Coaching allowed ONLY before a match
or during rest period in between rounds.
-2 warnings result in deduction of one point and awarded to opponent.
3 warnings result in DQ.
-Ties will be resolved with a "Sudden Death" first clean
point wins round. Championship matches will go one extra round before
a "Sudden Death" round (if needed).
-Respectful disputes will be made only by fighters' coach or instructor
to center referee, during rest period or at end of match. Final
decisions will be made by the Arbitrator.

l e s : Grappling
-A minimum of 1 Center Referee, and a panel of 2 Side Judges to
tally points
-Matches will consist of 1 or 2 rounds, of 2 min with a 30 second
rest period in between. Championship matches will be 2 or 3 rounds.
-Mandatory equipment will be: Clean and complete heavy Judo type
uniform w/2 tops (one White or off-white color and a Blue color
top for each competitor). Also a belt or sash, NO tank tops or T-shirts
allowed for grappling. Groin cup (for men), Mouth Piece. Optional
equipment: Approved ear guards, sparring gloves, foot pads, elbow
and knee pads, also forearm or shin guards. Approved wrestling shoes
and rash guards are permitted.
-No long finger or toe nails, No jewelry (necklaces, rings etc),
No torn or un-repaired uniforms
-Each competitor must have a coach during a match, for both instruction
and to ensure the competitors safety.
-Competitors will be matched by weight and grappling experience.
-Legal Scoring Techniques: 1) Successful take downs
or throws, 2) Successful immobilization's by superior positions,
3) Controlled joint lock (arm bars, leg bars, shoulder locks, and
wrist locks and ankle locks), 4) Controlled choke with or without
the aid of the uniform, (without using the hand to close the wind
pipe or dangerous neck cranks) and 5) Escapes or reversals
1- Take downs or throws- When competitor offensively
forces opponent to the mat, with the following points structure:
3 points for full throw or sweep that takes both opponents feet
off the mat. 2 points for a half-throw that causes 1 foot of the
opponent to leave the mat. 1 point for any other successful sweep
or throw. 1 point will be taken away if you land in opponents guard
with any throw. Jumping in and wrapping legs around opponent to
bring him down is NOT considered an offensive takedown. NO points.
2- Superior position immobilization - Holding opponent
in any of the following positions for a minimum of 10 seconds will
be awarded 1 point: Corner Top Position, Side Top Position, Full
Mount, Side Mount, Back Mount. 1 point will also be awarded for
the following positions: Reverse Top Position, Back Reverse Top
Position, Guard Position, Leg Tie Position, and Knee on the Stomach
Position. The guard position will be awarded a point only once per
match.
3- Controlled joint locks- Arm bars, leg bars, shoulder
locks, and wrist locks will be awarded 1 point. If the is technique
is cinched in too tight and opponent is in danger, the opponent
must tap or say the word tap (if unable to physically tap), the
match will stop and is over unless using the 3 tap system (agreed
upon at rules meeting with competitors and coaches).Using the 3
tap system, they competitors will be reset, unless any competitor
has tapped 3 times, which means match is over. A tap out is for
SAFETY and will be called if the opponent taps, or the corner signals
for a tap or if the referee deems for the competitors' safety will
call for a tap.
4- Controlled choke- Whenever a competitor places
opponent into a controlled choke with sustained pressure for a minimum
of 5 seconds will be awarded 1 point. If opponent taps out, will
be awarded a "tap out point". A total of 3 "tap out
points" will end match. Windpipe and serious neck cranks that
place opponent in danger are forbidden as well as excessive pressure
on an acceptable one.
5- Escapes or reversals- Whenever a competitor escapes
out of a superior position, joint lock or choke, or reversing opponent
from a top position to a bottom position (demonstrating control
of the position) or when if competitor counters an attempted takedown
or throw, will be awarded 1 point.
-NO sweeps allowed that go against the knee joint.
-NO striking in grappling and especially NO kicks or stomps to opponent
on ground ! (You will get a warning or DQ !) - NO head butts, elbow
or knee strikes. NO eye, neck or joint attacks. No gouging or "fish
hooking". NO biting or scratching
-NO "popping of the joints". NO uncontrolled, or wild
fighting (You will receive a warning or DQ !), No drawing of blood
(Accidents will be reviewed by the judges).
-NO attacking small joints such as fingers and toes
-NO profanity, no un-sportsman like conduct, and NO disrespect will
be allowed or tolerated (This will result in IMMEDIATE Disqualification,
and you will not be refunded.
-No running away, out of bounds or stalling (will result in a warning)
-Coaches MUST protect their competitor at all times. If they are
in a position or technique of potential injury, they MUST yell tap
for their competitor. Otherwise, the center ref will. Safety First.
-2 warnings result in deduction of one point and awarded to opponent.
3 warnings result in DQ.
-Ties will be resolved with a "Sudden Death" first clean
point wins round. Championship matches will go one extra round before
a "Sudden Death" round (if needed).

FORMS RULES:
EMPTY HAND FORMS
- Rings - 20' x 20' for ages 12 and up, I5' x 15' or larger for
ages 12 and under if they're under black belts, 20' x 40' for Chinese
forms divisions if requested.
- Final Decisions - Made only by the Rules Arbitrator.
- Number of Judges - Every black belt division must have five (5)
judges. Under black belt division can have three (3) judges.
- Location of Judges - One side on the ring for contemporary or
open forms as well as traditional forms.
- Uniform - Must wear a traditional or sport karate uniform with
no foul language on it. T-shirts as part of a school uniform are
allowed in Chinese (soft style) divisions only. The top may be removed
during the performance if appropriate for the division.
- Age - Must compete at the age group of your given division.
- Belt Rank - Must compete with the proper color belt worn for the
division he/she is competing in and at the same rank in all divisions.
- Amount of Divisions - Can compete in any amount of divisions of
each event.
NOTE: If you are competing in one division when your other division
is called, you will run the risk of being disqualified.
- Style - Must compete in the proper style division for the form
which is being performed. (Weapons allowed only weapon forms division)
Must Compete in the proper style division for the form, which is
being performed. A generalization of the specific forms criteria
is as follows:
Hard Style
Japanese/Okinawan Forms - Plain white uniform, max 4 kiai, kicks
above the waist are OK, NO multiple kicks, NO elevated spin kicks,
NO gymnastics. Traditional unaltered Japanese/Okinawan forms only.
Korean Forms - Plain White or Black/Blue trimmed uniformed for Traditional
(TKD/TSD) unaltered forms only (no gymnastics, no splits, etc.).
For other Korean arts such as FMS, HKD, KSW, etc. uniforms may vary
according to system (i.e.: Diamond Checked Doboks, Traditional Topo's,
etc.). With these forms, acrobatics such as flips, and splits, etc.
are allowed. Overall form must have "hard style" emphasis.
Hawaiian / Polynesian Forms - Uniforms must be consistent with system.
Arts such as Kempo, Lima Lama, Kajukempo, etc. Overall form must
have "hard style" emphasis.
Soft Style
Chinese Forms - Traditional Kung Fu/Gung Fu forms graded on traditional
content.
Chinese Forms - Wu Shu forms graded on standard Wu Shu Sets.
Chinese Forms - Tai Chi forms graded on standard Tai Chi Sets (The
standard time limits do apply).
Korean Forms - Not for "Traditional hard style forms"
(TKD/TSD) Soft style Korean arts such as Tae Guk Kwon, Tae Kyun,
Kwon Bop, FMS, HKD, KSW, etc. uniforms may vary according to system
(i.e.: Diamond Checked Doboks, Traditional Topo's, etc. With these
forms, acrobatics such as flips, and splits, etc. are allowed. Overall
form must have "soft style" emphasis.
Hawaiian / Polynesian Forms - Uniforms must be consistent with system.
Arts such as Kempo, Lima Lama, Wun Hop Kune Do, etc. Overall form
must have "soft style" emphasis.
Combined - Hard/Soft Styles
Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Hawaiian / Polynesian Forms - Forms must
have consistent flux of hard-soft, linear-circular content.
- Creative - Musical Forms - Sport or traditional uniform, soft
style techniques allowed. Form may include gymnastics, splits, music,
etc.
- Two-Man Set/Group/Props - All are allowed in non-traditional and
traditional form being executed. (weapons allowed),
- Sequence - Luck of the Draw.
- Availability - When the division has been declared closed and/or
the charting has started, no late entries are accepted.
- Time Limit - Up to three (3) minutes per performance is allowed
from the time the player enters the ring or when any players music
is started, which ever is first.
- Restarts - Black Belts receive one tenth (1/10) deduction point
of total score, under belts receive no penalty for the first restart.
- Music Player - Only in divisions that allow it. Unless provided
by the promoter, the competitor must provide their own music player
and someone to run it.
- Scoring Range - Black Belts will be scored 8-10 (average 9.00)
and under belts 5-8 (average 6.50). Finals scoring will be 9.50-10.00.
- Score Totals - All points are added up, and high and low scores
are thrown out (except in tie breakers).
- Ties - Both players compete again with the same form. High and
low scores are put back in. Second ties are broken by, repeat same
or different form, or if judges deem so, by a show of hands. (Finals
winners determined by the judges show of hands).
- Finals - The performance must comply with the division that was
won except music may be added to any contemporary divisions.
WEAPON FORMS
- Procedures - (same as empty hand forms)
- Specifications - Weapons must be authentic to martial arts and
must be protected from sharpness.
- Weapon Breaks - The player has five (5) minutes to replace it
with the same or a different weapon or can complete the form with
the broken weapon without penalty
- Time Limit - Up to three (3) minutes per performance is allowed
from the time the player enters the ring or when any players music
is started, which ever is first.
SELF-DEFENSE
- Procedures - (same as other forms exceptions)
- Props - Only people and weapons can be used as props in traditional
no other props, music or skit dialogue in traditional. Props, music,
dialogue and skits are allowed in contemporary (choreographed fighting).
- Time Limit - Up to three (3) minutes per performance is allowed
from the time the player enters the ring or when any players music
is started which ever is first.

KNIFE SPARRING - Dan

STICK SPARRING (Middle Sticks) - Jung Bong Dae Ryun Sul
Mandatory Equipment: Wooden Sparring Knife,
Light Padded Sparring Sticks, Full Head Gear w/ Face Shield, Forearm
Protection (must protect inside and outside of forearms), Gloves,
Chest Protector, Mouth Piece, Groin Cup.
Optional - Non-Mandatory Equipment: Elbow Pads,
Knee Pads, Shin Guards, etc.
A full set of Mandatory Equipment will be available
at competition (*except mouth piece and groin cup).
It would be good to have your own gear (at some point) *Only
bare feet or approved grappling shoes allowed on mats. To see

KNIFE SPARRING RULES
LEGAL WEAPON TARGETS:
* Trunk covered by chest protector
* Hands, wrists and forearms covered by protector
* Thighs and shins (slash only, NO stabbing)
* Behind knee (slash only, NO stabbing)
ILLEGAL WEAPON TARGETS:
* Any uncontrolled attack or defense
* Unprotected neck and throat
* Any unprotected area of the body *except controlled slash to thigh
* Armpits, groin or feet
* Spine, shoulder blades, buttocks, complete head (front, sides,
top and back)
ILLEGAL TECHNIQUES:
* Any uncontrolled attack or defense
* Strikes against the joint (ie: front or sides of the knee)
* Groin, elbows or knees (targets)
* Spine, neck, back and front of head
* Elbow or knee strikes (techniques)
* Popping the joints
KNIFE SPARRING - POINT SYSTEM:
- CLEAN, CLEAR SCORING TECHNIQUES WILL BE AWARDED BY REFEREE
- Non-Mortal Point - Clean slash to protected hand, wrist
or arm. Clean light slash or light thrust to protected trunk
- Mortal Point - Clean, controlled strong slash or thrust
to protected trunk.
1 POINT - Slash or thrust to Non-Mortal target area - (Low-Value)
3 POINTS - Slash or thrust to Mortal area ( mortal wound ) - (High-Value)
3 POINTS - Disarm or opponent looses weapon - (Highest Value)
WINNER OF MATCH
* All matches will be one round, as long as 2 minutes in duration
* The first 9 Points scored, automatically WINS the match (such
as 3 mortal wounds)
* IF 9 Points are NOT reached, then the highest total points earned
in the 2 minute round will be declared the winner
* A DISQUALIFICATION AUTOMATICALLY MAKES THE OTHER THE WINNER
SIMULTANEOUS SCORING STRIKES
+ Two strikes of equal value cancel each other out
(ie: double mortal wounds)
+ Two strikes, not of equal value: The strike of greater value will
be scored (ie: mortal wound over non-mortal)
+ If two mortal wounds happen three times the match will go to sudden
death (a single or both knives are placed in the middle of the ring)
WARNINGS & DISQUALIFICATIONS
= 1 Warning: No penalty (attacking illegal target or using an
illegal technique)
= 2 Warnings: A point will be awarded to the offended party. The
second warning does not have to be the same as the first
= 3 Warnings: Disqualification - The third warning does not have
to be the same as the first or second
= Immediate Disqualification - Un-sportsman like conduct, Disrespect
to officials (referee, judges etc.)
- ALL PROTESTS MUST BE
MADE THRU YOUR INSTRUCTOR TO THE HEAD REFEREE OR THE ARBITRATOR
- THE REFEREE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN STOP THE MATCH OR CALL FOR
TIME OUT
STICK SPARRING RULES

WINNER OF MATCH
* All matches will be one round, NO TIME LIMIT
* The first person to score 3 times to each of the 3 target categories
(HEAD,WRISTS & TRUNK) will be declared the WINNER - Total of
9 Points
* A disarm will score ONE point for ANY target category (HEAD,WRISTS,
or TRUNK)
* A DISQUALIFICATION AUTOMATICALLY MAKES THE OTHER THE WINNER
SIMULTANEOUS SCORING STRIKES
+ Two strikes of equal value cancel each other out (ie: double
abdomen thrusts)
+ Two strikes, not of equal value: The strike of the greater value
will be scored (ie: abdomen thrust over wrist strike)
